Southwest

Southwest Colombia travel guide: Cali, Popayán, San Agustín and the Tatacoa Desert, with travel times, safety advice and the best time to go.

The southwest is the part of Colombia that package tours rarely reach: the salsa of Cali, the white city of Popayán, the pre-Columbian statues of San Agustín and the red and grey Tatacoa Desert. You need at least 8-10 days to see it properly, but this is also the region with the widest travel warnings: right now it’s best visited in stages, mostly by plane, checking each road journey before you set off. Here’s what to see, how to plan your journeys and when to go.

What to see in the southwest: the highlights

StopWhy goHow long
Calithe salsa capital: dance schools, classic clubs and Pacific cooking2-3 days
Popayánthe all-white colonial centre and the Holy Week processions1-2 days
San Agustínthe UNESCO archaeological park with hundreds of stone statues2-3 days

Las Lajas Sanctuarythe neo-Gothic church built across a canyon near the Ecuadorian border1 day

The Tierradentro archaeological park, with its painted underground tombs, is also UNESCO-listed, but it lies in a rural part of Cauca currently covered by travel warnings.

How to plan the trip

  • Cali has the best-connected airport in the area (CLO), with flights from Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena. The 10 August 2026 earthquake damaged many buildings, but the city is open to visitors.
  • Popayán is best reached by plane from Bogotá: the road from Cali crosses rural parts of Cauca covered by the warnings.
  • San Agustín and Tatacoa are in Huila department: fly to Neiva from Bogotá. From Neiva, Tatacoa (Villavieja) is about an hour by road and San Agustín 4-5 hours by bus.
  • Las Lajas is near Ipiales, in Nariño: fly to Pasto and continue by road for about two hours. Check the advice for Nariño before you go.

Travel by day, leave a spare day in your plans for landslides and roadworks, and always ask at your accommodation about the road you plan to take. More tips on flights and buses are in our guide to getting around Colombia.

When to go

The driest months are December to February and June to August. Cali is hot all year (highs around 30 °C / 86 °F), Popayán and San Agustín, higher up, are mild and rainy; Tatacoa is dry and scorching at midday, so visit at dawn and dusk. Holy Week in Popayán (March or April) and the Feria de Cali (25-30 December) are the liveliest times, but also the most expensive. Seasons for every region are in our guide on when to visit Colombia.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to visit southwest Colombia?

Cali, Popayán, San Agustín and Tatacoa can be visited with normal precautions, but travel advice warns against Cauca outside Popayán and parts of Valle del Cauca. Fly between stops and check before any road journey.

How do you get to San Agustín?

Fly from Bogotá to Neiva, then take a 4-5 hour bus to San Agustín. It’s the simplest option and lets you add the Tatacoa Desert too.

How many days do you need for the southwest?

At least 8-10 days for Cali, Popayán, San Agustín and Tatacoa, because distances are long and some legs need to be flown.
