Cookie policy

Which cookies and similar technologies colombia.io uses, who sets them, how long they last and how to accept, reject or change your choices at any time.

This page explains which cookies and similar technologies colombia.io uses, what they’re for, who sets them and how you can manage your preferences. To learn how I process personal data, see also the privacy policy. The controller is Gianluca Orlandi, who you can contact at gianluca@colombia.io.

What cookies and similar technologies are

Cookies are small text files a website saves in your browser. Similar technologies, such as the browser’s localStorage or scripts that read information from your device, work in a similar way: on this page I call them all “cookies” for simplicity.

They can be first-party, set by colombia.io, or third-party, set by other services (Google, Clicky, Cloudflare). Some are essential and don’t need your consent; all the others are switched on only if you consent in the consent message you see on your first visit, run by Google’s privacy platform (certified under the European IAB TCF standard).

Essential cookies (always on)

These are needed for the site to work and stay secure. By law they don’t require consent.

__cf_bm, cf_clearance, _cfuvidCloudflaretell people apart from bots and protect the site from attacks; set only when neededfrom 30 minutes to end of session, depending on the cookie

I use Clicky Web Analytics (Roxr Software Ltd., United States) to see how many people visit the site, from which countries and which pages they read. It helps me understand which guides are useful and which need improving. The Clicky script loads only after you consent to analytics.

The site does not currently use Google Analytics. If I switch it on, I’ll add it to this table first.

The site shows Google AdSense ads (Google Ireland Limited), always labelled “Advertisement”. With your consent, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to show ads based on your interests, limit how often you see the same ad and measure results. Without consent Google may show non-personalised ads, which only use contextual information such as the page you’re reading.

The full, up-to-date list of Google cookies is on How Google uses cookies. You can also manage personalised ads in My Ad Center and, for many ad networks, through Your Online Choices (EU and UK) or the Digital Advertising Alliance (US).

Google Maps (only if you load them)

Some pages, such as the map of Colombia, include a Google Maps map. In its place you’ll see a box with a “Load the map” button: until you press it, no data is sent to Google. If you load it, Google receives your IP address and may set its own cookies (for example NID) under its privacy policy.

When you click an affiliate link you leave colombia.io and land on the partner’s site, sometimes via an affiliate network that records the click. The partner and the network set the cookies needed to recognise your booking and calculate my commission on their own domains. These cookies aren’t set on colombia.io and are governed by the partners’ cookie policies:

  • Affiliate networks: Travelpayouts, Impact, Partnerize, Awin, Tradedoubler and the Amazon affiliate programme.
  • Partners: Booking.com, Civitatis, GetYourGuide, Skyscanner, Airalo, SafetyWing, Heymondo, Wise, Revolut, Europcar and Sixt.

You can avoid these cookies simply by not clicking affiliate links, or delete them in your browser settings after booking.

How to accept, reject or change your choices

  • On your first visit the consent message lets you consent, not consent or manage options, choosing purpose by purpose and vendor by vendor. Rejecting is as easy as accepting and doesn’t stop you reading the site.
  • You can change your mind at any time via the “Cookie preferences” link at the bottom of every page.
  • You can delete cookies already stored in your browser settings: on your next visit the message will ask for your preferences again. In almost every browser you’ll find the option in the settings, under “Privacy” or “Cookies and site data”.

The durations shown are those declared by the providers and may change: their policies are the reference for the latest list. If you have questions about a cookie you find in your browser, email me at gianluca@colombia.io.
