Taganga
Taganga on your own: getting there from Santa Marta, dive course prices, boats to Playa Grande and Playa Cristal, safety tips and where to stay.
In this guide
Taganga is a fishing village in a bay just north of Santa Marta, ringed by dry, cactus-dotted hills: colourful boats on the beach, seafood restaurants and one of the cheapest places in the Caribbean to learn to dive. It’s only 15 minutes by taxi from the city. In my view it’s worth half a day for the village and a boat trip to Playa Grande, or 3-4 days if you want a diving certification. To sleep, though, Santa Marta is often the more convenient and calmer choice. Here’s how to get there, what diving costs and the precautions to take.
How to get to Taganga
- From Santa Marta by taxi: about 15 minutes from the centre. Recent sources quote 15,000-20,000 pesos, a little more at night and on holidays: agree the fare before you get in.
- By city bus: small buses run from central Santa Marta to Taganga, cheaper than a taxi but slow and crowded.
- From the airport (SMR): the airport is south of Santa Marta, about 30-45 minutes by taxi from Taganga depending on traffic.
The rest of the coast’s connections, from Cartagena and towards Tayrona, are in our Santa Marta guide.
Things to do in Taganga
| What | Time | Approximate price |
|---|---|---|
| Seafront walk and seafood | 1-2 hours | seafood lunch, depending on the restaurant |
| Boat to Playa Grande | half a day | agree at the jetty, ask for a return fare |
| Try dive | half a day | about 220,000-280,000 pesos |
| PADI Open Water course | 3-4 days | about 1,200,000-1,600,000 pesos |
| Boat trip to Playa Cristal (Tayrona Park) | full day | organised tour, plus park entry |
- Diving. Taganga is one of the cheapest places in Colombia to take a course: schools dive along the Tayrona National Park coast, with coral, tropical fish and warm water all year. The PADI Open Water course takes 3-4 days and costs around 1,200,000-1,600,000 pesos; a try dive for non-certified divers about 220,000-280,000 pesos. Ask for a written all-inclusive quote (equipment, boat, park entry, certification) and choose schools with recent reviews.
- Playa Grande. The best beach near the village, with seafood shacks and calm water. Boats leave from the main beach and take a few minutes: the price varies with the season, so agree it beforehand and ask what time the boat comes back. Organised trips from Santa Marta also combine Taganga and Playa Grande.
- Playa Cristal. One of the clearest-water beaches in Tayrona National Park, reachable only by boat. The easiest option is an organised boat trip; remember you also pay park entry and that Tayrona closes three times a year.
- Sunset over the bay. Fishing boats coming home and the sun dropping behind the hills are the best moment of the day: enjoy it from the beach, not from the isolated viewpoint.
Safety in Taganga
In recent years Taganga has had crime problems: local news and many travellers report thefts on the trail to Playa Grande and robberies at the viewpoint above the village, as well as drug dealing around the bars. The centre is busy and calm by day, but a few rules apply:
- go to Playa Grande by boat, not on foot;
- don’t go up to the viewpoint alone, and never at sunset;
- in the evening, stay on the main streets and return to Santa Marta by taxi;
- firmly turn down anyone offering drugs;
- leave your passport and valuables in your accommodation’s safe.
More generally, in 2026 the Sierra Nevada area had roadblocks on the Troncal del Caribe: check the latest in our guide to safety in Colombia, along with the GOV.UK and US State Department advice.
Where to stay: Taganga or Santa Marta?
| Where | Best for | Pros and cons |
|---|---|---|
| Taganga | divers taking a course | close to the dive schools and boats; the village is less quiet at night. See places to stay in Taganga |
| Santa Marta historic centre | everyone else | restaurants, buses to Tayrona and Minca, Taganga 15 minutes away by taxi |
My advice: if you’re taking a dive course, stay in Taganga, choosing a place with good recent reviews close to the village centre; otherwise stay in Santa Marta and visit Taganga for the day. Santa Marta’s areas are described in our Santa Marta guide.

When to visit Taganga
The best time is December to April, the dry season, with calm seas and clearer water for diving, although between January and March the wind can make the sea choppy. Rain is more frequent from September to November. It’s hot all year, with highs around 32-33 °C (90-91 °F). During Colombian holidays (mid-December to mid-January, Easter week) the beaches are crowded. For the full picture see when to visit Colombia.

- Picking the cheapest dive school without reading reviews: ask about certification, insurance, equipment and how many dives are included.
